Selecting the Optimum Container

February 12, 2015: By David R. McCulloch

SSI SCHAEFER's VP David McCulloch explains the importance of rethinking your logistics equation by reversing the order in which you determine how you will package, store, and ship an item. "Reusable containers can cut expenses throughout the supply chain by reducing packaging, labor costs and product damage. To get the most return on your investment in reusables, however, you need to pick the right container that optimizes cube utilization and reduces freight costs."

January 14, 2015: By Bob Trebilcock, Executive Editor, Modern Materials Handling Magazine

Much has been written lately in the mainstream press about the future of robotics. Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have noted how robots are growing in the workplace, as has the Boston Consulting Group.

The trend is also notable in the materials handling industry, where piece picking robots represent the next frontier. In Rochester, New York, startup firm Iam Robotics and Rochester Drug Cooperative are testing a new piece picking robot that, if commercialized, could be a harbinger of things to come.

The Changing World of Industrial Distribution

Goods-to-Person (G2P) Workstation

As customer expectations parallel those in retail, industrial distributors are breaking out of traditional solutions to meet the e-commerce challenge.

September 1, 2014: By Josh Bond, Associate Editor, Modern Materials Handling Magazine

Both industrial and retail distributors can check the same number of boxes on the list of pressing concerns: increased consumer expectations, reduced cycle times, SKU proliferation, e-commerce, labor availability and, naturally, Amazon. Although a few companies are successfully meeting these challenges, it could be argued that the industrial distribution segment as a whole has lagged somewhat behind retail.

Optimizing Cold Stores

How can the company get the best use of the cold store?

Across the region, dedicated cold storage facilities are being planned. With growing demand for refrigerated space to store a multitude of products, ranging from pharmaceuticals to perishables, it would seem to be a wonderful business opportunity for companies to consider.

Vertical Lift Modules can reduce order picking times by 30-50%

Logimat® Vertical Lift Module

Learn when to apply semi-automatic/dynamic VLM storage technology [and when to use traditional static storage methods such as shelf-supported mezzanines with shelf totes and shelf dividers].

We all understand Vertical Lift Module (VLM) technology (vertically arranged storage trays in the front and back of the system, with an elevator and extractor in the middle allowing individual trays to be moved to the operator at an ergonomic pick height) and the advantage of being able to convert square feet storage (shelving in x/y coordinates) into cubic feet storage which takes advantage of the z-direction to fully utilize the building’s clear ceiling height. As an example, a shelving area of 25,000 sqft can be reduced to about 700 sqft when using a VLM, allowing the same amount of items to be stored.
